Over 1,000 student-riders of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Motorcycle Riding Academy have graduated since the school's launch in September, according to a report by Philippine News Agency.

The academy, which teaches basic riding skills and observance of traffic rules and regulations, among others, gave certificates of completion to the course finishers.

“So far, simula nang buksan ito sa publiko noong September 27, mahigit isang libo na po na motorcycle riders ang ating napagtapos, nabigyan ng certification (when it was opened to the public last September 27, more than 1,000 motorcycle riders have graduated, were given certification),” MMDA acting chair Romando Artes said in a PIA press conference Friday.

The academy aims to decrease motorcycle-related accidents by providing theoretical and practical courses on riding for free to the public.

It accommodates 100 student-riders, who may enroll online or through walk-in, per batch.

The course is offered for free and participants simply need to bring their own helmet and protective gears.

However, they can bring their own motorcycles if they do not want to practice on the donated units at the academy.

“We’re coordinating with TESDA [Technical Education and Skills Development Authority] and LTO [Land Transportation Office] para ma-accredit po ang ating motorcycle academy para payagan na ‘yung ating certification na i-issue sa mga graduate po ay tanggapin ng LTO bilang requisite sa pagkuha po ng lisensya para makapagamaneho ng motorsiklo (for the accrediation of our motorcycle academy and to consider the certificates issued to graduates as requisites for license application for motorcycle riders),” he added.
