Kai Sotto to join Gilas for FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers
Gilas Pilipinas will keep its focus on the third window of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers set for June 16 to 20 while the waiting game for Kai Sotto continues, according to a report by GMA News.
Interim head coach Jong Uichico bared that their preparation in a bubble setup at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna has been ceaseless and will continue to be regardless of the fate of the 7-foot-3 prodigy, who arrived in the country on Monday night.
The decorated mentor added that they are well on their way in the buildup and that his wards will all be ready once the final window kicks off at Clark.
“We are getting there, in time for the third window,” said Uichico of their training in a message to GMA News Online.
Sotto came to boost the nationals’ buildup for the Qualifiers before officially starting his stint with the Adelaide 36ers in the National Basketball League (NBL). He will have to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine and has to test negative before being cleared.
And barring any complication, the Filipino wunderkind could suit up for the nationals, however, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) special assistant to the president Ryan Gregorio said Sotto’s attendance in the games remains in question.
Uichico agreed, saying that they will need to wait for Sotto’s clearance first before deciding on whether he would be included in the games against either South Korea on June 16 and 20 or Indonesia on the 19th.
“As soon as he clears all protocols, we will take it from there,” Uichico said.
