Political Zarzuela

The anticipated political zarzuela has begun. Move over placeholders, forever presidential special assistant Sen. Bong Go to former PNP Chief Sen. Roland “Bato” de la Rosa. The real actors for the 2022 election drama are coming in.

These two placeholders have perfectly played their role to the max. They’re good actors, if I may say so, sparing nothing. There’s no limit to what both will do to convince the electorate that they are bent on seeking the presidency and the vice presidency.

Over the weekend, Gen. Bato’s video singing the 1993 signature song of Rod Stewart “Have I told You Lately that I Love You,” went viral. In fairness as expected of most military officers, his voice was pleasantly soothing.

There was no holds barred in spending for the ever loyal PSA, who’s infomercial has been aired over prime time TV with no less than the President himself, advising him to continue his works and legacy, as his political platform. Sen. Bong even cried, (was it crocodile tears?) as he admitted that there would be changes, which is beyond his control.

The plot thickens and the situation changed altogether. The jockeying started Tuesday with the youngest presidential son Baste Duterte announcing his abdication of his pursuit to seek a re-election as vice mayor of Davao City.

Hours after, came the announcement from Baste’s sibling, the madame of the hour Inday Sara, tweeting that she, too, is withdrawing her certificate of candidacy (COC) for re-election, giving in to Baste the mayoral candidate.

Then, there’s a side show – the petition questioning the eligibility of presidential contender former Senator Bongbong Marcos because of the tax evasion case. The Commission on Elections has already raffled off to its second division the case against the son of the deposed dictator, the late President Ferdinand Marcos.

It may seem anti-climatic for some, the ending of this political drama is Bongbong Marcos will slide down to the VP with Inday Sara going for the top post. Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo brokered the Sara-Bongbong tandem.

The tattletale around town is GMA, after a three-year political hiatus, is reportedly eyeing the speakership of the house while Bongbong’s sibling, Sen. Imee, will go for the senate presidency.

For a cynical political observer, I believed that this side show is a significant part of the storyline. The Comelec has to resolve this ticklish issue soonest. I could be wrong in my timeline but my gestimate is within the next few days before this coming Monday, November 15, the deadline for the substitution.
