Pole Vaulting

Yes, there’s a need for us to sprint. We have to pole vault from this ostensibly lingering lethargic economic state to a more energetic condition, especially with the coming holiday season.

The latest government decision to bring the alert level to a notch down is a positive development. The behaviour of the people has, altogether, changed with almost everyone raring to go out from their virtual house arrest. The exodus of the people this long weekend is a testament to this.

Definitely, the pandemic is still here.  The authorities, including those who are running for the top position, need to resolutely address the health crisis and the economic downturn.

As presidential aspirant Vice President Leni Robredo emphasized that her priority in governing, if she is fortunate enough to win the 2022 May elections, is to prevent the worsening health crisis and steer heal  the country’s COVID-induced economic recession back to pink health.

Of late, there’s improvement in the rollout of the inoculation. Is it because of the increase in the vaccine inventory or is it because of the election fever? I’m not pretty sure of the motivation, but, one thing is for sure, the virus is here to stay a bit longer just like the Spanish flu of 1918.

We will eventually learn to live with this health crisis by pivoting to an endemic strategy, treating it like, if possible, an ordinary common flu. While to date, there are no known ways to prevent and treat COVID-19, pharmaceutical firms such as Pfizer and Merck are reportedly working on oral antiviral therapeutic drugs against COVID-19. Admittedly, though, this will not happen overnight

Back then, it took 10 years after the outbreak of the Spanish flu for life to return to normal. Hopefully, though, the advancement in research and technology will make it quicker to have a fairly unrestrictive existence. Adopting preventive approaches to avoid it at all costs.

The pandemic has likewise negatively impacted  the country’s education system. Though, slowly the Departmentof Education is allowing face-to-face classes in certain areas and on a limited basis, online as well as module based teaching is nowhere close to face-to-face education.

It used to be that a well-educated workforce was the country’s competitive advantage. Now, we’re wanting! It is a bit depressing to think of how the younger generation, the country’s future leaders, are being mold this way without knowing the basic principles of social and moral graces that are taught and acquired in schools.

With proper care and protocol, the authorities need to pole vault from the homebase, online classes to face-to-face as basic education is key to help manage the pandemic.

We need to realize that education is a great equalizer and the fiscalizer of poverty. Nobody wants to stay poor. But with proper education coupled with luck and opportunity will go a long way in lifting the lives of our fellow Filipinos.
