‘Am pretty sure that almost all of us have relatives in the US. And some of our “kamag-anak” incorporated, who are in the so-called boarding area of their lives, have expressed their desire to be rested here.

Be that as it may, did you know that both relatives there in the US and here have to hurdle the tedious process of complying with their wishes? There are various permits and licenses to be obtained from local government units.

This I realized when my San Francisco-based friend shared her exasperation on the volume of documentary requirements needed to bring the cremains of her mother, whose wish is to be laid to rest beside her husband.

To prepare the resting place in a memorial park in Paranaque, my friend’s niece must have a copy of the title of memorial lot, an authorization of the surviving children for the use of the lot, a copy of valid ID of the children and a birth certificate of the surviving kin.

These documents – authorization, the valid ID and the birth certificate that shows the relationship of the children to the owner of the lot – have to be presented if the receipt of the lot is no longer available, considering that it was purchased years ago.

The moral lesson here: keep the receipt.

But, there’s more.  An authorization letter from the children for the exhumation/consolidation and interment of spouse, copy of Death Certificate – decease and the Certificate of Cremation, and more importantly, a Burial Permit from Parañaque City must be obtained.

Now, before a burial license can be issued, another permit has to be obtained from the Pasay Municipality since the international airline that my friend will be onboard carrying the urn will be landing within the jurisdiction of Pasay.

Another set of documents have to be presented: copy of the death certificate, certificate cremation, consular mortuary certificate; and transfer certificate issued by the Philippine Consular office in the Bay Area.

For domestic transfer of the cremains, a permit to transport has to be obtained from the Bureau of Quarantine.

‘Am sharing this with you to be aware of this tedious and difficult process but must be complied with.
