Students will enjoy free rides at the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) beginning Aug. 22 until Nov. 5, according to a report by Philippine News Agency.

In a Laging Handa briefing on Wednesday, Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) Administrator Hernando Cabrera said the free ride program is a directive of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to aid students as they return to the classrooms.

To avail of the program, Cabrera said students would only need to present their school identification (ID) or proof of enrollment to the LRT-2 passenger assistance center where they will be given a single-journey ticket.

“After that babalik na po tayo doon sa normal na 20 percent discount para sa ating mga estudyante (After that we will return to normal and give them the 20 percent discount for students),” he said.

He reminded students and the rest of the riding public of the continued implementation of Covid-19 safety protocols such as temperature checks, mandatory wearing of face masks, physical distancing, and refraining from eating and speaking while inside the trains.

“Sumunod din po tayo lagi doon po sa tinatawag din natin na mga security protocols. So, ini-inspect pa rin po natin ang mga bag, iyong mga deadly weapon po – ang dami po naming nakukumpiska (Let’s also follow security protocols. We still inspect bags for deadly weapons -- we have confiscated a lot already),” he said.

Earlier, the Department of Education said the school year 2022-2023 will begin on Aug. 22 and will slowly transition into five-day in-person classes by Nov. 2.
