Taylor Swift case included in University of Virginia's MBA program
The University of Virginia's Darden School of Business has joined the growing list of institutions offering Taylor Swift-inspired lessons.
The university recently announced a new case in its MBA curriculum, titled "Shamrock Capital: Pricing the Masters of Taylor Swift."
It offers an in-depth look at the human and business factors surrounding Shamrock Capital, an investment firm that bought the master rights to Swift's first six studio albums from Big Machine for US$300 million.
Swift is currently re-recording those albums to give licensers the option to work directly with her rather than her old record label.
She began releasing her re-recorded music in April 2021, when she dropped "Fearless (Taylor's Version)," followed by "Red (Taylor's Version)," "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)," and "1989 (Taylor's Version)." Fans are still awaiting her versions of her self-titled album, "Taylor Swift," and her 2017 studio album "Reputation."
The case study, which will be taught at Darden in the core finance curriculum, provides context for introducing students to important business concepts, including discounted-cash-flow (DCF), market multiples, and the perpetuity model for terminal value estimation.

According to the university, the case is designed with four key learning objectives, namely, the introduction of firm valuation techniques based on a simple DCF model or market multiples, and the stimulation of an appreciation and understanding of the perpetuity model for estimating terminal value.
The case also seeks to teach students how to estimate the cost of capital using industry comparables and build intuition about the relationship between firm growth, operating profitability, and value creation.
Previously, Stanford University, the University of Missouri, Arizona State University, Berklee College of Music in Boston, Rice University in Houston, and Ghent University in Belgium have offered Swiftie classes and courses ranging from literature to social psychology.
