Empowering the Academe Through Communication Excellence
In an effort to fortify the connection between academia and effective communication, De La Salle University's The Jesse M. Robredo Institute of Governance organized a two-day training event titled "Communicating with Clarity and Confidence: A Media Relations Workshop for Academics." This valuable workshop, held on September 24, 2023, aimed to equip faculty and researchers with the necessary skills and knowledge to communicate effectively with the public.
The workshop featured a prominent guest speaker, Joe R. Zaldarriaga, Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications at Meralco. Zaldarriaga, renowned for his expertise in authentic and purposeful communications, shared invaluable insights with the participants.
The importance of effective communication cannot be overstated, especially in the academic world. Universities and research institutions play a vital role in shaping public discourse and policy decisions. The ability to convey complex ideas and research findings clearly and confidently to a broader audience is crucial for bridging the gap between academic insights and real-world impact.
During his presentation, Zaldarriaga emphasized the significance of authenticity in communication. He stressed the importance of conveying messages that genuinely reflect an institution's values and intentions. This authenticity, he argued, not only builds trust but also fosters meaningful connections with the public.
The workshop provided a platform for academics to explore various communication strategies and tactics, including media relations, public speaking, and storytelling. It encouraged participants to embrace new approaches to conveying their research and ideas effectively to different audiences, including the media, policymakers, and the general public.
Prof. Ador R. Torneo, Director of La Salle Institute of Governance, joined Zaldarriaga during the event, further highlighting the commitment of academic institutions to empower their faculty and researchers with the tools needed to engage with society confidently and clearly.
By fostering stronger bonds between the academic community and the public through effective communication, institutions like De La Salle University's The Jesse M. Robredo Institute of Governance contribute not only to the advancement of knowledge but also to the betterment of society as a whole. The "Communicating with Clarity and Confidence" workshop served as a significant step toward achieving this noble goal.
