Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) has allocated around PHP4 billion this year in capital spending to reduce non-revenue water (NRW) in the West Zone, according to a report by Philippine News Agency.

“We are accelerating our NRW Management projects this year so that we can recover more water supply for distribution to customers, in preparation for El Niño,” Maynilad chief operating officer Randolph Estrellado said in a statement Monday.

As a result of its intensified water loss reduction initiatives, the water utility firm was able to recover around 47 million liters per day (MLD) in the first three months of the year.

This recovered volume is enough to serve the supply requirements of some 241,000 Filipinos.

Among the activities undertaken to generate this recovered volume for the first quarter of 2023 were the replacement of 31 kilometers of old pipelines and repair of 7,832 pipe leaks in the cities of Quezon, Manila, Muntinlupa, and Las Piñas.

This includes the major leak repair that Maynilad conducted along Osmeña Highway corner Zobel Roxas Street in Makati City, which yielded a water recovery of 17 MLD.
