DOH registers 3,218 new Covid cases on Oct. 27

The country recorded 3,218 new COVID-19 infections on Wednesday, the lowest in over five months, pushing the nationwide total to 2,768,849, the Department of Health said in a report by CNN Philippines.

The last time the number of new cases was lower than that was on May 23, when 3,083 new infections were recorded.

About 50,152 or 1.8% of the case tally are active or people currently sick, with at least 73.4% experiencing mild symptoms, 11.02% in moderate condition, 6.8% asymptomatic, 6.2% with severe symptoms and 2.6% in critical condition.

The death toll climbed to 42,348, which is 1.53% of the COVID-19 total, after 271 more people lost their lives. For the past four days, the number of new fatalities have been above a hundred.

Meanwhile, 6,660 others got better, raising the recovery count to 2,676,349 or 96.7% of the case tally.

The DOH said it reclassified 227 survivors into fatalities after validation and deleted 41 duplicate cases, including 37 recoveries.

One laboratory failed to submit data on time and was excluded from the count. That laboratory contributed an average of 0.06% of tested samples and 0.07% of positive individuals in the last 14 days.

The positivity rate - or percentage of tested people with positive results - continues to drop and is now at 7.6% based on 41,049 tests reported on Oct. 25.

Positivity rates below 3% mean testing efforts are sufficient according to US nonprofit Covid Act Now, while the World Health Organization says a rate of below 5% means the infection has been controlled.

OCTA research fellow Guido David also shared the group's recent report which stated that Cebu City is now classified as "very low risk" for COVID-19 as of Oct. 26.

The report said Cebu City's average daily attack rate or ADAR is at 1.72 per 100,000 per day, its reproduction number is 0.42, its healthcare utilization rate is low at 19% and its positivity rate is just 2%.

ADAR, also called the incidence rate, refers to the number of infected people per a population of 100,000. Officials earlier said the higher the attack rate in an area, the higher a person's risk of getting the infectious disease there.

As for the reproduction number, medical experts have said it should be one or less, as anything higher would indicate significant community transmission.

In Metro Manila, the incidence rate is 6.73 per 100,000, the positivity rate is 6% and healthcare utilization is also low at 35%, OCTA said.

It added that the National Capital Region, Rizal, Cavite, Bulacan, Batangas and Davao City are all low risk for COVID-19. However, it noted that Rizal's intensive care unit occupancy rate is still at a critical level of 94%.
