The Department of Energy (DOE)'s first batch of electronic tricycles or e-trikes was handed over to its inhabitants by the Valenzuela City government on Tuesday morning.

At a ceremony held in Barangay Bignay, eighty of the 250 electric vehicles were allocated to select beneficiaries from Disiplina Village Bignay and Canumay East-Lawang Bato-Punturin-Paso de Blas Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (CALAPUPATODA).

“The beneficiaries were mostly from the poorest of the poor, from those drivers whose motor vehicles need replacements, and from those who are willing to operate the e-trikes,” Amado Guimpayan, city traffic regulatory unit officer-in-charge, said.

Mayor Rex Gatchalian said the e-trikes aim to provide livelihood and reduce the carbon emission in the city.

Valenzuela City is one of the 32 local government units (LGUs) granted by the energy department with the e-trikes.

A total of 75 LGUs requested for the said vehicle, the public information office (PIO) said.

The batch will ply the CALAPAPUTODA routes.

The next batch will be distributed mid-August.
