Persons with special needs among early voters in Taguig
Disability is not a hindrance to exercising the right to suffrage, as two voters have demonstrated in Taguig City.
Federico Jose, 70, a wheelchair-bound senior citizen, and John Michael Malan, 23, who is blind, were among the first to cast their votes at Sta. Teresa Elementary School in Taguig on Monday.
Jose got teary eyed as he shared his reasons for continuing to exercise his right to suffrage despite his situation.
“I don’t care if it won’t matter, but I am going out now to do my citizen’s duty and be heard,” Jose said.
Jose, who has been a resident of Taguig since 1970, said he still hoped for change in the country and that his vote would be a factor for this to happen.
As he arrived at the school grounds, Jose was assisted by an election volunteer and ushered to the courtesy lane room, which aimed to make Monday’s polls convenient for people with special needs, like senior citizens, persons with disabilities, pregnant women, and those with children.
Malan, on the other hand, said he wanted to make sure that he helped “the right, deserving people to get the posts.”
Malan, vice president for persons with disabilities of Bagumbayan Village, chose whom to vote for as his sister mentioned the names of candidates.
Like Jose, Malan said he appreciated the PWD-friendly election process, where “all possible assistance were extended to us.”
