San Juan to open temporary site for vendors

San Juan will relocate the vendors of Agora Market to a temporary market site following the start of the public market’s total renovation.

The local government said the temporary market site, located at the San Juan Plaza, will have 98 stalls installed with tents, tables, water and electric supply for vendors affected by the renovation of the market.

Mayor Francis Zamora will be leading the opening of the temporary relocation site on Wednesday (July 29).

According to the city government, the market is currently undergoing a total renovation to modernize its facilities, improve its ventilation and stall counters, install better water lines and lighting fixtures, and replace the old flooring.

The total renovation will be done in six phases with each phase estimated to take around 30 to 40 days.

“The seafood, poultry, meat, vegetable and fruit section will all have their turn at being relocated to the Plaza and will return to their respective areas once their section has been renovated,” the local government said in a statement.

“The last phase is the rehabilitation of the parking area, public toilets, Market Office, and the Materials Recovery Facility,” it added.

On July 1, the market was closed for 15 days after a fish stall helper tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

All vendors, helpers, and workers in the market were then swabbed and placed on quarantine.

The local government said 26 of them were found positive for the coronavirus and were immediately isolated.

After a cleanup and disinfection, the market resumed operations on July 16 and all of its 647 vendors, helpers, and workers were allowed to return. They were issued health clearances by the City Health Office.

Meanwhile, the city government said all the 27 individuals who earlier tested positive have already recovered and completed their quarantine.
