San Juan readies ordinance to create new parking spaces

The San Juan City Council is preparing an ordinance to encourage lot owners to transform their vacant properties into parking areas.

The ordinance will give the local government the right to take over the lands in the areas that had been unused and abandoned, and convert them into parking spaces to decongest the streets, may they be national or city roads.

The local government said it will start with government-owned lands

“Yung ating Sangguniang Panlungsod this week is already meeting para i-fnalize ito. everything will be within the 60-day deadline that will be given to us.”

A number of private individuals have expressed interest in converting their own lot into a parking facility.

City Mayor Francis Zamora said the private owners may opt to manage the parking area themselves or allow the barangay officials to operate the said facility for them.

“Either way bibigyan sila ng incentives. Una hindi ka na sisingilin ng idle land tax. 5 percent yun. Pangalawa, we will give them as much as 5 year tax break in terms of the payment of business taxes,” Zamora said.

Other cities in Metro Manila are also planning to duplicate San Juan City’s plan in the development of their respective jurisdiction.
