San Juan marks 15th cityhood anniversary

San Juan City celebrated on June 17 its 15th year of cityhood which coincided with the observance of the Dengue Awareness Month and the World Environment Month, according to a report by Manila Bulletin.

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora together with other city government officials and employees led the series of programs at the San Juan City Hall.

The celebration started with the signing by 21 San Juan barangay captains of the Dengue Prevention Month Commitment which strengthens the coordination between the city government and the barangay sector in creating a dengue-free environment in the city.

The city government then launched its Eco-Pamilya initiative which aims to create a holistic approach in the protection, preservation and conservation of the environment.

Several families, who are members of Eco-Pamilya, also attended the Basic Environmental Awareness Seminar and learned about proper waste segregation, composting, and rain water harvesting.

Zamora also led the turnover of segregation bins, composting, and rainwater harvesting drums to the members of Eco-Pamilya.

After the programs at the city hall, Zamora, together with 300 cyclists, biked around the city as part of San Juan’s Bisikleta Para sa Bakuna Vaccination Campaign Program,which is one of Zamora administration’s pioneer projects.

Their first stop was Barangay Corazon de Jesus to observe the clean-up operations of its creeks and canals for Dengue Prevention Month.

The group then went to Santolan Town Plaza to post ‘smoke-free establishment’ sticker to businesses.

A short program about the importance of smoke-free areas in the city was also held, led by Zamora and the plaza’s management.

After the stop at the plaza, the team then proceeded to Barangay Addition Hills for the clean-up drive in celebration of the World Environment Month.

They then biked around the city to continue the Bisikleta Para sa Bakuna campaign to encourage San Juaneños to get their booster shots against the virus.

“This is a big day for us because we simultaneously celebrated four events in one day. This only further cements our commitment to our residents that we are continuing our promise for a Makabagong San Juan,” Zamora said.

Fifteen years ago, San Juan was converted from a municipality into a highly urbanized city, under Republic Act No. 9388 (“An Act Converting the Municipality of San Juan into a Highly Urbanized City to be known as the City of San Juan”).

The bill was sponsored by the mayor’s father, Congressman Ronaldo Zamora, known as the Father of San Juan City.
