Zamora ends 50-year Estrada dynasty in San Juan
Former San Juan Vice Mayor Francis Zamora has defeated a scion of the Estrada clan as city mayor, ending the family’s regime of more than 50 years.
The San Juan city board of canvassers proclaimed Zamora Monday night.
As of 9:32 p.m., Zamora led Vice Mayor Janella Estrada by around 10,000 votes. Zamora received 34,027 votes while Estrada got 23,988.
Estrada is the daughter of former senator Jinggoy Estrada and a granddaughter of Manila mayor Joseph Estrada.
Joseph Estrada was San Juan’s mayor from 1967 to 1986. His son, Jinggoy, held the post from 1992 to 2001.
Jinggoy’s half brother, Senator JV Ejercito, succeeded him, serving as mayor from 2001 to 2010.
Ejercito’s mother, Guia Gomez, is the incumbent mayor. She was elected in 2010.
Zamora’s father, Ronaldo, succeeded in his reelection bid for congressional representative, defeating actor Edu Manzano.
