The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said it is temporarily suspending clearance processing operations nationwide in line with the government's imposition of measures against the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Clearance processing is suspended from midnight of March 18 to midnight of April 13, the NBI said in an advisory on Tuesday evening.

"We will resume our operations on 13 April 2020, unless earlier lifted," it said.

The bureau urged the public to observe strict home quarantine.

President Rodrigo Duterte has placed the entire island of Luzon under quarantine, banning mass gatherings and suspending public transportation, among other provisions, until midnight of April 13.

The Department of Health has recorded 187 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday afternoon. Twelve patients have died and four have recovered.

COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered coronavirus, which belongs to a family of viruses that cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), according to the World Health Organization.
