Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto revealed that he will be seeking reelection next year, according to a report by Manila Bulletin.

“Hindi pa naman ako nag-announce pero ‘yun naman po siguro ‘yun ( I did not formally announce yet but that’s that),” he said in a television interview when asked if he would seek reelection.

“Definitely [I want to continue.].We’ve made a lot of gains. Sa totoo lang, limited ang nagawa namin (Truth is that what we accomplished was limited) , a lot of projects, like pushing for universal health care, a lot of it were delayed because of the pandemic,” he continued.

In his first nine months as mayor before the COVID-9 pandemic, Sotto said that he tried so hard to clean the system of the local government of Pasig.

“We had nine months to clean things up. Grabe ‘yung pinagdaraanan namin dito. ‘Yung nililinis namin dito. Hindi rin naman siya biro, talagang napakahirap (What we went through was not easy. What we cleaned. It’s no joke, it is very difficult.) But we’ve had gains, we built momentum steadily,” he said.

Sotto ended the 27-year reign of the Eusebios, a political family, in Pasig City in 2019.

In February, the young mayor was hailed by the US State Department as one of its international anti-corruption champions, citing his prioritization of transparency and anti-corruption initiatives.

Sotto was described by the US State Department as a “standard-bearer for a new generation of Philippine politicians.”
