Cimatu wants Pasig River cleared of structures

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary and new Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC) chairperson Roy Cimatu wants to clear Pasig River of illegal structures.

Cimatu visited the PRRC head office in Quezon City on September 10 after President Rodrigo Duterte signed Executive Order (EO) 90, which transferred the chairmanship of the Board of Commissioners of PRRC to DENR.

During his visit to the PRRC, Cimatu discussed the directions that the DENR and PRRC would take under the new leadership. He aims to unify the government’s rehabilitation efforts for the Pasig River and Manila Bay.

He pointed out the new leadership’s objective of recovering the easements of Pasig River and its connecting tributaries or esteros, as well as all waterways in Metro Manila.

“Let us fix, clean, and maintain the three-meter easements along the river and waterways,” Cimatu said.

The easements serve as buffer zones between the waterway and the communities to ensure public safety, provide access to transport, and avenues for environmental management.

PRRC follows several easement laws, such as Article 51 of the Water Code of the Philippines, as well as the Metro Manila Council Ordinance No. 81-01 for the minimum 10-meter easement along Pasig River.

Cimatu also vowed to dismantle structures and properties that were illegally built along the river.

The PRRC management committee meanwhile presented the ongoing rehabilitation efforts of the agency and how the strengthened partnership with the DENR could bolster its success.

Since 2009, PRRC resettled almost 20,000 informal settler families to safe and decent housing facilities and developed at least 41,000 linear meters of environmental preservation areas in the form of linear parks, walkways, and greenbelts along the Pasig River.
