Taxi driver who tried to scam Austrian vloggers arrested

Taxi driver who tried to scam Austrian vloggers arrested

Austrian vloggers Mike & Nelly on Wednesday expressed deep appreciation to the Manila International Airport Authority following the arrest of the taxi driver who was the subject of their vlog posted on their YouTube channel.

In the video, the driver was recorded forcing the couple to pay more for the pieces of luggage they had. Being frequent visitors to the Philippines, the vloggers refused to pay more, saying they were aware that no such additional payment was required.

Immediately after he was informed about the incident, MIAA general manager Monreal ordered the Intelligence and Investigation Department, under retired Col. Roque Alcantara, to hunt down the driver, who was later identified as Jhumil Bule, from Taytay, Rizal. The arrest was carried out with the assistance of the Taytay Philippine National Police.

Monreal confronted the taxi driver at the airport intelligence office and then instructed Alcantara to surrender Bule’s driver’s license to the Land Transportation Office and recommend for its revocation.

Monreal also ordered airport police to ban the entire fleet of DAVIS taxi from all Ninoy Aquino International Airport terminals.

“Beginning last Monday, May 6, we have removed the white taxi queueing lane in NAIA Terminal 1 as a prelude to eventually putting an end to the privilege given to them to line up and pick up passengers in the four terminals,” Monreal said.

“While we do not intend to limit the choices to MIAA accredited transport, we are also duty bound to protect our passengers from enterprising drivers. This campaign against abusive taxi drivers also extends to the drivers of MIAA accredited transport services. No one is exempted here. We have no room for people who continue to destroy the reputation of NAIA and damage the image of our country before the world. Sadly, these people simply have no love for country,” Monreal added.

Appropriate charges will be filed against Bule before the Pasay City Prosecutor’s Office.

Last year, the MIAA Customer Relations Center recorded a total of 301 complaints against white taxis, and about 56 for the first quarter of 2019. These complaints were endorsed to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board for appropriate action.
