A total of 26 domestic and international flights were delayed after the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) issued a red lightning alert from 6:53 p.m. to 7:28 p.m. on Tuesday.

Some parts of the country were experiencing heavy rains and thunderstorms due to Tropical Depression Dodong.

A red lightning alert is a safety measure to prevent any untoward incident from happening when lightning is prevalent in the immediate area and may endanger passengers, personnel, and flight operations. Ramp movement for both aircraft and personnel is temporarily suspended during this period.

Earlier, MIAA announced that the Ninoy Aquino International Airport was safe against lightning.

The airport has 20 lightning arresters to protect electrical and telecommunication facilities of buildings from the damaging effects of lightning.

These devices are checked every three years to ensure adherence to international standards, the MIAA said.
