No flights were affected in Sunday’s red lightning alert at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, according to the Manila International Airport Authority.

The MIAA issued the red lightning alert from 12:41 p.m. to 12:55 p.m., when it was downgraded to yellow lightning alert. The alert was lifted at 1:12 p.m.

During red lightning alert, the ramp movement for both aircraft and ramp personnel is temporarily suspended – a safety measure to prevent any incidents from occurring while lightning is prevalent in the area.

In past weeks, a number of international and domestic flights were either delayed or cancelled at the NAIA, or diverted to Clark, due to red lightning alerts.

On June 25, a ground handler at NAIA suffered injuries when lightning struck in the vicinity of the airport. He fell from the ladder while detaching ground power unit from the aircraft.
