Parañaque suspends anniversary gatherings

Parañaque City suspended the beauty pageants, festival and fireworks display during the 22nd cityhood anniversary celebration amid the threat of 2019 novel coronavirus.

The city was supposed to kick off its activities on Monday, January 10, 2020. Malacañang declared February 13 as a non-working holiday in Parañaque for the local government unit to celebrate its cityhood.

According to Mayor Edwin Olivarez, 20 of the 24 scheduled activities to celebrate their city’s anniversary were cancelled.

The LGU said that among the cancelled activities are the Miss Parañaque pageant; “Gandang Mamita” contest; the “Sunduan Festival”; street dance; the awarding of the 2019 Outstanding Taxpayers; and the Mega Job Fair.

The State of the City Address of the mayor was also cancelled by the LGU.

“In the interest of everyone’s safety, we have been advised by our city health officials to take care of exposing our constituents particularly children to crowded places. We hope they will support and understand us for temporarily postponing the cityhood anniversary activities this year,” said Olivarez in a statement.

Parañaque is home to hundreds of Chinese nationals now working at the world-class Entertainment City along the Coastal Road, specifically in the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators or POGOs.

The local government said they are also watching closely the Chinese nationals and POGOs in three barangays in the city, saying their city health officials are imposing the protocol of the Department of Health on dealing with nCoV.

Mar Jimenez, Public Information Office head, said the unveiling of the 2019 National Anti-Drug Abuse Council Performance Marker and the blessing of Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office Command Center will push through on Monday.

Moreover, he said that the blessing of the Ospital ng Paranaque 2 building in Barangay Don Bosco will continue on Wednesday.
