NBI arrests fake cop in Parañaque

account_balanceParañaque chat_bubble_outline0 Comments

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said it arrested a man posing as a police captain assigned to the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG).

NBI Deputy Director Ferdinand Lavin identified the suspect as Jay-Ar Fortuno Lim, who was arrested by agents of the NBI’s National Capital Region (NBI-NCR)on Feb. 18 in Parañaque City.

Lavin said NBI agents arrested Lim based on the arrest warrant issued against him over a carnapping case.

During the operation, NBI-NCR Chief Cesar Bacani said Lim was caught carrying a handgun without a permit to carry, and that Lim even introduced himself to arresting NBI agents as a senior inspector of PNP-CIDG.

However, Bacani said NBI agents already received certification from the PNP that Lim is not a policeman nor employed by the PNP.

Because of this, Bacani said Lim was presented before the Parañaque City Prosecutor’s Office for inquest last Wednesday (Feb. 19) on charges of violating Section 31 of Republic Act No. 10591, the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, and for usurpation of authority under Article 177 of the Revised Penal Code.

Bacani added that additional estafa charges will be filed against Lim based on the complaint of his 65-year-old landlady.

The complainant claimed the suspect introduced himself as a policeman and has been renting an apartment unit from her, but had refused to pay her.

He even pocketed P260,000 from the woman, promising to help her transfer the title of her properties to her children due to alleged connections he has with the Land Registration Authority (LRA).

But, after the complainant learned the papers were not processed, she decided to seek the help of the NBI in arresting the suspect.
