MMDA looking for beggar who threatened motorist with rock
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority is looking for a man who went viral on social media after threatening a motorists while begging for alms on the northbound lane of Edsa, near Guadalupe.
MMDA operations chief Edison “Bong” Nebrija said his team was able to locate the beggar, but the man ran away.
“When he saw us, the guy ran away. But we found the bottle he used for sniffing solvent. We found another group, on the other side, while we reported to our care unit for rescue. There was a child with them, but they, too, ran away when they saw our care unit,” Nebrija said in a post on social media.
Nebrija said his team reported the matter to Mandaluyong Police.
“We are trying to rescue these people out of Edsa because it’s not a safe place for them,” he said.
Facebook user Mane Teodoro on Tuesday uploaded a video of her encounter with the beggar man just past the Guadalupe north bound.
In her caption, Teodoro said the man threatened to throw a rock at her car if she refused to give him money.
“I was supposed to give him some change so he wouldn’t throw the rock at my car. So I opened my window a little to hand him the change, but he told me he wanted 100 pesos. So I changed my mind,” Teodoro said.
“He forcibly put his hand through the small opening in the driver-side window, so I closed it and trapped his arm. Because I didn’t give him the 100 pesos he asked for, he smashed the rock on the car windshield twice while his arm was trapped by the window. Fortunately, the windshield didn’t break,” she said.
Teodoro said the beggar also scratched her car door with the rock he was holding.
She said three minutes after she reported the incident to MMDA officers stationed at an emergency bay in front of SM Megamall, another lady driver reported a similar incident.
