The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority fired a traffic enforcer who was caught on video physically and verbally abusing his live-in partner and the latter's minor child.

A video showing MMDA Traffic Aide 1 Roel Gatos beating his wife Irene Hermida and her 11-year-old son Josiah Hermida went viral on social media recently.

In a resolution, the MMDA said Gatos has committed a “disgraceful and immoral” act that is “conduct prejudicial” to the best interest of the MMDA being a public employee.

The MMDA said Gatos violated the basic norm of decency, morality and decorum abhorred and condemned by society.

His actions violated the norm of public accountability and diminished the people’s faith in the agency, the MMDA added.

Based on the records of the case, Gatos was already arrested by the police.

The domestic violence reportedly took place at Gatos’ residence in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.

MMDA spokesperson assistant secretary Celine Pialago said the agency has already sent financial assistance and relief goods to Gatos’ wife and son amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis.

Pialago added Irene would also be given a job opportunity through the MMDA program.

"Magkakaroon na din ng trabaho si nanay dahil siya po ay magiging parte na ng programa ng MMDA," she said in a message to reporters.
