MMDA creates task force to reduce Cubao-Makati traffic

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority has created an interagency task force to implement measures designed to ease traffic between Cubao in Quezon City, and Makati City.

MMDA Edsa traffic czar Edison “Bong” Nebrija said Task Force Cubao-Makati was created in response to President Duterte’s pronouncements that travel time from Cubao in Quezon City to Makati City would be cut to five minutes by the end of the year.

“All the pronouncements of the President becomes directives and mandates not only to MMDA but to all government agencies,” Nebrija said. “We created Task Force CubMa ahead of the President’s pronouncement.”

Under the task force, the MMDA, Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group, Inter-Agency Council on Traffic, Department of Transportation, Land Transportation Office, and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board will manage traffic from Cubao to Makati.

The Department of Public Works and Highways, on the other hand, will introduce “engineering interventions” to improve traffic wherein weekend road repairs on Edsa are sped up.

Nebrija said the various stakeholders, such as the government, motorists, and commuters, must work together to ease the traffic situation in Metro Manila.

“Everybody should be on board, not only the government, but also the people as the President has already spoken. Discipline is important,” he said.

The MMDA and the LTFRB have implemented various measures to ease traffic flow in the metropolis, such as limiting the operations of UV Express on a terminal-to-terminal basis, enforcement of the no-loading and unloading policy of provincial buses along Edsa and the removal of provincial bus terminals.

Meanwhile, the DPWH said major infrastructure projects were underway to help decongest traffic in the metropolis, among them the Metro Manila Skyway Stage 3 and North and South Luzon Expressways connector road project.
