MMDA official wants motorcycle taxis banned from national highways

An official of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said two-wheeled motorcycle taxis should be prohibited from plying national roads in the same way that tricycles cannot take the major highways.

MMDA general manager Jojo Garcia raised this question in abriefing on motorcycle taxis on Thursday. The agency is considering banning motorcycle taxis from national roads if they become legalized, he said.

“Sabi ko nga, kung ang tricycle tatlo na ang gulong, bawal sa national road, eh lalo na ‘tong mga motorcycle taxi,” Garcia said. (As I said, if the tricycle, which has three wheels, is prohibited from national roads, what more motorcycle taxis.)

He made the suggestion out of safety concerns, saying neither the rider nor passenger would be safe from fatal road accidents despite numerous precautionary measures and safety equipment.

Garcia said the agency will be recommending to the motorcycle taxi technical working group the ban of motorcycle taxis from national roads such as Circumferential Roads 1, 3, 5, and 6 and Radial Roads 1 to 10.

They would also be banned from crossing EDSA. He said it would be much safer if they remain on the inner roads.

“Hindi mo pwedeng isabay ‘yan sa mga bus,” the MMDA official added. (They [motorcycle taxis] can’t drive together with buses.)
