Sean Chambers seeks UST coaching post

Two more former basketball players have thrown their names to the mix of those who are applying for the University of Santo Tomas' (UST) head coaching post on Monday.

Former Alaska import Sean Chambers confirmed in a podcast that he applied for the job vacated by Aldin Ayo.

"Yes, I have," Chambers said when asked if he already passed a letter of intent to UST's athletics department led by Fr. Ermito De Sagon.

Meanwhile, former Blackwater interim coach Aries Dimaunahan also said he sent a letter of intent to De Sagon's office.

Chambers, currently the dean of students at Fern Bacon Middle School, is set to bring his expertise in handling students off the court to UST if he gets the nod, which will be advantageous in motivating the players especially that the team is reeling from the alleged training bubble in Capuy, Sorsogon amid the pandemic that led to Ayo's indefinite ban from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

Chambers also said he wants the Thomasian community to be involved in the Growling Tigers' campaign next UAAP season.

"We start first and foremost with the Tiger Nation. We got to come back to what they used to be," he said.

Chambers won six Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) titles, all with the Aces, including four consecutive Governors' Cup championships during the mid-90's.

He was also a member of Alaska's 1996 grand slam squad being its Governors' Cup import.

Chambers also developed a friendship with legendary UST coach Aric Del Rosario, who was concurrently part of the Aces' coaching staff then.

On the other hand, Dimaunahan vows to help UST "in any way I can".

Dimaunahan actually graduated at UST but never suited up for the Growling Tigers.

His stints with the RP Youth Team during the mid-90's hindered him from trying to crack a spot at UST's basketball squad.

However, Dimaunahan began to blossom when he joined Blu in the defunct Philippine Basketball League.

From there, he carved a basketball career that would see him play for five PBA teams and San Miguel's Asean Basketball League squad.

He last coached Blackwater during the 2019 PBA season.
