Ancajas gets Sultan as sparring partner
One-time world title challenger Jonas Sultan was tapped as sparring partner of IBF world super flyweight world champion Jerwin Ancajas, according to a report by GMA News.
Ancajas flew to the United States last month together with his manager and trainer Joven Jimenez to meet with his handlers and finalize his ninth world title defense against Javier Rodriguez in Las Vegas.
The 28-year-old boxer currently trains in Los Angeles, California and he will be joined by Sultan who flew to the US on Sunday.
"Jonas would be a huge help in training camp given that he will be my permanent sparring partner," Ancajas told GMA News Online.
Ancajas and Sultan met inside the ring two years ago at the Save Mart Arena in Fresno, California, where Ancajas triumphed via unanimous decision.
The champion believes that even though he dominated Sultan in 2018, his old foe turned sparring partner is now a different fighter since that evening.
"I think he has improved a lot since we fought. I saw it in his training, punches, and footwork," Ancajas said.
For Ancajas, the most helpful asset Sultan brings to the table is a similar style to his upcoming Mexican foe.
"He doesn't get tired and also has a similar relentless come-forward style to Rodriguez," he said. "When we fought his punches were wild and coming from the outside, but he has worked on that."
