There’s frenzied activities in the political arena.

There’s the proclamation of LGU winners, followed by the top 12 senatorial candidates, who will be sitting in the 19th Congress. And amidst the petition to cancel the certificate of candidacy of the son of the deposed dictator and namesake, Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. that is pending at the High Court, the two Chambers of Congress resolved to jointly canvas the votes for the 2022 presidential and vice-presidential elections.

Just as an aside, it's said that there's a three-way fight for senate presidency and one of them is presumptive presidential sister Sen. Imee. However, rumour has it that Sen. Cynthia Villar will be it.

Back to the frenzied emerging political issues, there’s this and the wishful thinking of presumptive vice president Sara Duterte to take her oath of office on June 19, the birthday of the country’s National Hero Jose Rizal.

This is far off the course because the 1987 explicitly states that the term of office of the new president, vice president starts at noon of June 30. No ifs and buts about it. Whims or wishes are not an issue here. It’s the respect to the constitution that embodies the laws of the land. They are to be followed in text and the language.

This gamut of conflicting state of political affairs has led to the question of whether the country is going bananas?

Nope, the country is nowhere in the realm of being a “banana republic,” which in political science describes a country that is politically unstable and relies heavily on the exportation of a limited-resource product like bananas.

Agree. Banana is one of the country’s produce that is in demand outside. But, we’re no way politically unstable. The recently concluded national election, which to some Fil-Ams like my blast from the past friend Angelo V. is nonchalant, and despite allegations of certain mishaps, is a testament that we as a nation still uphold the political process.

While there’s this lingering question of honesty in the conduct of the May 9 polls, Junior has received numerous messages, phone calls from heads of states, among them US President Joe Biden, congratulating the presumptive president. Ambassadors and envoys of trading economies stationed here, too, have done the mandatory courtesy call.

All things considered, we have to deal with a Junior presidency in the next six years. From my vantage point, I believe he might not have the usual “honeymoon period” accorded by working journalists to the newly elected chief executive.

Junior’s Cabinet is slowly shaping-up. Except for Philippine Competition Commission Chair Arsenio Balisacan, whom he appointed to his previous post as Socio-Economic Planning Secretary and National Economic Development Authority Director-General, already there are apprehensions on the personalities joining his official Cabinet. Balisacan is ka-Batac!

With no “honeymoon period” insight, my aspiration is a smooth transition, having in mind the events that unfolded during the first State of the Nation Address of the second term of his late father. I wasn’t in my teens yet but based on historical accounts the late dictator was met with social and civil unrest, which eventually led into the “first quarter storm.”

That said, Junior must be smart and incisive in choosing who would be his trade secretary, finance chief, and the national treasurer, not because they’re LSGH classmates but because they’re competent and have integrity, underscoring the importance of these positions in nourishing and for the economy to be back in the pink of health.
