Filming of Avatar 2 completed

Director James Cameron announced that "Avatar 2" has finished filming, while "Avatar 3" is nearly done.

The renowned filmmaker talked about the highly-anticipated sequels during a video chat with former California Governor Arnold Shwarzenegger for the 2020 Austrian World Summit.

"COVID hit us like it hit everybody," Cameron was quoted as saying in the chat. "We lost about four and a half months of production. As a result of that, we've rolled around one more full year for a release in December of 2022. That's been announced already."

“Now that doesn't mean I have an extra year to finish the film because the day we deliver 'Avatar 2,' we'll just start working on finishing 'Avatar 3.' So where we are right now, I'm down in New Zealand shooting, we're shooting the remainder of the live-action,” the director added.

He said that they were "sort of 95 percent complete" with "Avatar 3."

The filmmaker said it was "lucky" that New Zealand was chosen as the production sit years ago since the country's response to the COVID-19 pandemic has turned out to be effective.

"We made the first film here in New Zealand and it turns out to be ranking first or second-best country in the world for its Covid response," he said.

Cameron, however, had yet to reveal details about the plot for the upcoming "Avatar" sequels.

"I can't tell you anything about the story. I believe in the mystery and the great reveal," he said.

“Avatar” (2009), is about a paraplegic Marine who goes on a mission on the planet Pandora in the form of a hybrid human-alien called an Avatar, which was created to facilitate communication with the planet’s inhabitants called Na'vis.

It starred Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver.

"Avatar" held the global box office record as the highest-grossing movie of all time for nearly a decade until it was toppled by “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019.
