Meralco to slash power rates this month

Meralco to slash power rates this month

The Manila Electric Company on Thursday announced that electricity rates would go down for the second straight month.

Meralco said power rates for this month would be reduced by 19 centavos per kilowatt hour, which means a decrease of about P38 for a household that consumes an average 200 kWh every month.

Rates for households with a monthly consumption of 300 kWh will be cheaper by P57, while those that consume 500 kWh will be P95 lower.

Meralco said the reduction in power rates was due to lower generation charges as determined through the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market, or WESM, despite the energy supply shortage in the Luzon grid.

Last month, the Luzon grid had been placed under red and yellow alerts for consecutive days at a time due to low power reserves.

“If you find that your Meralco bill has gone up, it’s most likely because of an increase in consumption. As far as rates are concerned, the price of electricity has actually gone down,” said Meralco spokesperson Joe Zaldarriaga.
