Marikina's young guns need a leader to orchestrate win
Head coach Elvis Tolentino emphasized the need for a leader of his young Marikina Shoemasters to finally book a win in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Lakan Cup.
After seven games, they are yet to file a victory as they got manhandled by the at the Ynares Sports Arena last Tuesday.
"Kulang talaga kami sa beterano, leader. Nahihirapan kami mag-adjust lalo na kapag ano, napapanuod niyo naman 'di ba ang daming pangit na tawag."
The tactician stressed out that aside from ex-pro Jondan Salvador, the rest of his squad are still in the grassroots and the bad calls are hardly affecting the game of his team.
"Ang problema ng team namin bata, kapag may pangit na tawag nalalamangan kami. Okay yung bandang huli yung calls pumapabor na samin pero lamang na yung kalaban eh. Nakabwelo na."
"Which is for my team nahihirapan kaming maka-recover kasi mga bata. This team except for Jondan Salvador, this team is grassroots talaga, yung walang pinanggalingan compared naman sa mga kalaban namin. Pero nakikita ko naman pwede yung mga players, pwede talaga. Pero kapag ganyan yung tawagan mahihirapan silang umangat."
Although according to him his players are constantly improving but this is not enough to give them a win.
"But it is not an excuse kapag natalo. Ako naman tingin ko sa mga players nagi-improve, lumalaban. Pero kulang talaga. Siguro kung makakuha kami ng somebody who can able to lead the team. Yun ang kulang namin eh, kaya nakikita mo bumibitaw eh. Kulang sa heart."
"Siguro nandun yung winning attitude eh. Winning attitude. Yun lang problema ko kasi yung mga player ko they didn't come to schools that are winners, meron man, kakaunti. I'm trying to build a winning attitude. Syempre nahihirapan ako dahil mga magagaling na kalaban namin dito."
Coach Tolentino also opens up the possibility of his team joining other minor leagues to accelerate their overall progress.
"Iniisip ko nga na isama sa ibang liga para ma-develop. Sana ma-keep ko sila next year, sana lang mag-stay pa rin sila sakin para may laban naman. Pero definitely, even naman hindi kami maka-recover this season, next season papalakas kami."
