Marikina parents told to have their children vaccinated

Marikina City Mayor Marcelino “Marcy” Teodoro has advised parents to have their children vaccinated against the polio virus.

Teodoro said the city government targets to have 40,000 children below five years old in the city to be vaccinated against polio.

The mayor’s call came days after the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) asked local government units in the country to help promote polio vaccination in their cities.

The Department of Health (DOH) recently confirmed the re-emergence of the polio disease after the country was declared polio-free nearly two decades ago.

Teodoro personally administered oral anti-polio vaccines to around 200 children at the Barangay Sto. Niño Covered Court on Monday.

“This is an initiative of our community to have oral polio vaccination. This will give them protection against polio,” Teodoro told parents who went along with their children.

“We love our children. As the father of this city, I do not want to see my children with polio. That is why before this even spreads in our city, we are already taking precautionary measures to avoid this to happen,” he added.

The mayor likewise reminded the parents to avail of the complete dose of the anti-polio vaccines.

The mayor stressed that the vaccines were safe and that the public should not be afraid of having their children vaccinated.

Teodoro said that he had ordered a massive information drive on the importance of vaccination. The information drive would explain what is polio and how it could be avoided.

A social mobilization program will also be rolled out where city health personnel will administer polio vaccinations in schools, communities, villages, and subdivisions in the city.

“It is very important for children to get vaccinated as there is no cure for polio,” he stressed.
