Marikina prepares for 'PinasLakas’ vaccination

The local government of Marikina City presented on Friday, July 22, to officials of the Department of Health (DOH) the city’s facilities, resources and services for Covid-19 response in line with the upcoming launch of “PinasLakas,” the agency’s new Covid-19 vaccination campaign, according to a report by Manila Bulletin.

Marikina City Mayor Marcelino “Marcy” Teodoro welcomed Dra. Maria Rosario Vergeire, officer-in-charge of the Department of Health (DOH), and other national health officials in a courtesy call.

Teodoro and Vergeire visited the Covid-19 vaccination site at the Marikina Sports Center, where she led the vaccination of senior citizens.

They also went to the Primary Care Center at the Sto. Nin%u0303o Health Center, which provides routine immunization, TB DOTS, dental services, and nutrition programs.

The Marikina City Health Office (CHO) also announced that 146.09 percent of the general population have been fully vaccinated as of July 20.

Around 71.01 percent of the general population received their first booster, and 14.14 percent have gotten their second booster jabs.

For the A2 or senior citizens category, 124.57 percent were fully vaccinated, 90.68 got their first booster, and 41.47 percent have been inoculated with the second booster.

Vergeire praised the city government’s efforts and accomplishments in the vaccination drive.

Marikina City houses the first local government-led construction of a highly-equipped molecular diagnostic laboratory in Metro Manila, built during the height of the pandemic in 2020.

The facility is able to screen around 400 to 500 samples per day from Covid-19 testing kits using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) machines.

Health protocols are strictly enforced in the city, and disinfection and clean-up drives of public and private spaces in the city are conducted regularly.

The local government established an odd-even number scheme at the Marikina Public Market, where odd and even numbered stalls will operate on alternate dates. This was implemented to follow the physical distancing guidelines in the city.

They also noted how Marikina Rescue 161 continues to help the people of the city through further programs on non-communicable diseases, family planning, and maternal care. They’ve also set up senior citizen-centered clinics, general and telemedicine consultation.

In Teodoro’s proposed post-Covid health recovery plan, he aims to extend the services offered by the molecular laboratory, and offer free diagnostic and laboratory testing in each barangay.

His administration also plans to build and open a Multi-Diagnostic Center beside the Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center.

Vergeire urged the public to get inoculated to help prevent the spread of the virus.

“I once again urge all members of the eligible population here in Marikina City to get their 1st and 2nd booster shots done. Let us all put our trust in the science and protection behind our vaccines as part of our arsenal in the fight against Covid-19. Through sustained collaboration and partnership, we can fulfill the promises of the Universal Health Care and overcome the Covid-19 pandemic,” she said.

The nationwide PinasLakas campaign will commence on July 26.
