Man arrested for extorting P11,000 from UDM student
A 50-year old man was arrested in Paco, Manila after he allegedly swindled about P11,000 from an incoming Grade 11 student at the Universidad de Manila (UdM).
Manila City Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso on Thursday, September 5, presented the suspect before members of the media.
The suspect, identified as Celso Dimanlig y Salazar, allegedly demanded P11,000 to ensure the student's enrollment at the city government-operated university.
"Kaya itinatag ang UdM ay para makapagbigay ang pamahalaan ng pagkakataon sa mga bata na mahihirap na makapag-aral," Domagoso said.
Dimanlig was arrested by elements of the Manila Police District Special Mayor's Reaction Team (MPD-SMaRT) on Tuesday afternoon, September 3, after the student's mother lodged a complaint against him.
"Ano namang uri ng tao ito? Libre naman ang PLM, UdM. All they have to do is pass the exam," he said. "Ano ito, may-ari ng paaralan?"
"Naiinis ako. Mahihirap na nga ang mga taong ito, gusto lang iraos mula sa kahirapan, ginagatasan pa. Nahirati kayo sa nakaraang gobyerno," he told the suspect during the press conference.
The suspect will be facing charges for violation of Article 293 (Robbery Extortion) and Article 315 (Swindling or Estafa) of the Revised Penal Code.
