Police on Tuesday arrested in Tondo two men who were posing as traffic enforcers from the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau.
The suspects, Noel Silva, 37, and Jay-V Gantang, 36, both residents of Tondo, Manila, were caught after extorting money from motorists on Jose Abad Santos Avenue.
PO1 Narciso Ignacio said they were conducting anti-crime operations in the area when a concerned citizen told them about the suspects who had been allegedly flagging down motorists and extorting money from them.
The two were wearing MTPB uniforms when they were caught directing traffic in the area around 1:20 a.m. near the corner of Abad Santos and Mayhaligue Street. The suspects failed to present any valid MTPB ID.
This was not the first time the two were arrested for extortion. In 2018, they were caught in an entrapment operation for allegedly extorting money from a truck driver in the same location.
Silva and Gantang were detained at the Moriones Police Station and charges for violating Article 177 of the Revised Penal Code, or usurpation of authority, were filed against them before the Manila Prosecutor’s Office.
