Around 15,000 people participated in the 34th International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) of Baseco in Tondo, Manila on September 21.

The cleanup, dubbed “Bayanihan para sa Malinis na Karagatan”, aims to encourage Filipinos to help in cleaning beaches, coastal areas, rivers, and other waterways of trash and debris.

The volunteers from the different sectors of government brought their cleaning materials, gloves and sacks in removing trash in the foreshores areas of the Baseco beach.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Undersecretary Juan Miguel Cuna also encouraged Filipinos to refrain from littering the waterways.

“’Yung mga mamamayan sana po suportahan natin ang International Coastal Cleanup pero hindi lang po ‘yun siguraduhin po natin na ang mga kaibigan natin, kapitbahay natin, at komunidad siguraduhin na itigil na po ang pagtatapon ng basura sa lahat ng katubigan lalo na po sa mga estero (To the citizens, I wish you continue to support International Coastal Cleanup, but not only that, we must assure that our friends, neighbors, and community should stop throwing garbage in the body of waters especially in slums),” Cuna said.

On the other hand, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Danilo Lim said a sewage treatment plan is in the works to catch waste from the slums located in Baseco.

Lim said this would help address sanitary issues in the area, after a sample from it tested positive for the polio virus.

Presidential Proclamation No. 470 declares the third of September of each year as the ICC Day in observance of the Global Coastal Clean-up celebrations.
