Manila keeps liquor ban

Manila is keeping the ban on the sale and public consumption of liquor in the city.

Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso said residents have been asking them whether or not the liquor ban in the city has been lifted now that the general community quarantine (GCQ) is being implemented.

“Inuulit ko, bawal ho magtinda ng alak sa lungsod ng Maynila. Hindi po bawal uminom, pero hindi ko alam paano kayo makakabili kasi pinagbabawal ‘yan ng pamahalaang lungsod (I repeat, it is prohibited to sell alcohol in the city of Manila. Drinking is not prohibited, but I don’t know how you can buy drinks because it is banned by the city government),” he said in his city address.

“Binabawi namin ang lisensya ng mga nagtitinda ng alak (We are also temporarily revoking the license of stores to sell alcohol),” he added.

The Manila City government imposed a nation-wide liquor ban amid the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) crisis due to the rising number of quarantine measure violators. Domagoso said others may use the cash assistance that they received from the government to buy alcohol if he lifts the liquor ban.

He also said that those who drink alcohol sometimes get into fights. “Hindi natin kailangan ngayon ‘yan eh. Kailangan natin ng pagkakaisa, at payapa at panatag na komunidad (We don’t need that right now. What we need is unity, and a peaceful and secure community),” he said.

“Tutal, bisyo lang naman ito. Ang hinihingi ko ay pansamantala (In any case, this is only a vice. What I’m asking for is only temporary),” he added. “Saglit lang, bigyan niyo pa ko ng ilang araw. (Just for a while, give me a few more days). At the end of the day, it’s for the good of everybody.”

The local chief executive warned that they will close down the stores of those who will violate this law. “Don’t risk closing your business. We are going to shut it down. We are very strict with this,” he said.

Domagoso also clarified that the curfew in the city remains to be from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., contrary to reports that it will be moved to 10 p.m. He said the curfew will be lifted at the same time the state of public health emergency in the country is lifted.
