Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno

Isko opposes privatization of Manila properties

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno wants to stop the privatization of city government assets..

Moreno said this, as he gave orders for the continuous cleanup of the public markets in the city to make them more conducive as a place where the public can buy raw food under sanitary conditions.

‘Libagan, sabunan at i-deodorize natin ang ating mga pamilihang- bayan. Alisin natin ang lansa at mga di kanais-nais na amoy,’Moreno said.

The mayor added: ‘Walang mapa-privatize sa panahon ko. Tapos na ‘yung panahon na pati mga palengke pinagkakakitaan,’ in apparent reference to the move of the past administration wherein public markets were privatized.

Moreno said that in the case of the public markets that have been privatized by the previous administration, the present city government will guard the interest of the consumers and vendors.

He noted that the vendors who have become ‘victims’of privatization are being made to sell on the streets while certain construction or repair works are supposedly being done on the building where said vendors are supposed to be accommodated.

Moreno said that instead of protecting the vendors, they become victims of injustice under the hands of those who benefitted from the privation of public markets.
