Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno

Isko denies Manila robbery, extortion reports

Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso denied reports of robbery and extortion incidents in the city amid the enhanced community quarantine.

Reports of robbery incidents in Binondo and street dwellers blocking thoroughfares in San Andres and asking money from pedestrians and drivers spread on social media the past few days.

Domagoso said there is no truth to these reports, citing information from the Manila Police District.

The city mayor urged the public to get the news and information they need from the Manila city government’s social media pages and from established media outlets.

Ingat lang kasi nakakadagdag pa sa stress niyo (Let us avoid sharing information that we are not sure about. It’s good to verify. Always take care because this can add to your stress),” he said in his city address Thursday night.

The local chief executive also issued warnings against those sharing false information, as well as criminals who are taking advantage of the confusion amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

Many people who are posting these things are just fearmongering. Not only are you not helping, you are also scaring the public),” he said.

And for those who would attempt to commit crimes, they do not value their lives. As you know, every corner in Manila has a police officer on duty),” he added.

Thousands of police officers were deployed to man checkpoints and increase police visibility as the whole of Luzon was placed under enhanced community quarantine from March 17 to April 12.
