Isko asks PPA for data on ships arriving from China

Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso asked the Philippine Port Authority to provide data on ships that will arrive in Manila from countries with cases of the 2019-novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

Domagoso said the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) will give the city government a report after he submitted a letter of request for data.

“With regard to passenger ships, we should have a manifest. Where will they go?” he told reporters on Monday.

“At the very least, maybe Manila can help in identifying individuals or places that have been visited by people who tested positive for 2019-nCoV, because we really want to help the national government.”

The two confirmed cases of 2019-nCoV in the Philippines were confined at San Lazaro Hospital in Manila. One of the patients, a 44-year-old Chinese man from Wuhan, China, died on Feb. 1, the first reported death due to the virus outside China.

The local chief executive said they will be giving away more face masks in a “continuous effort” to keep Manila City residents safe.

He said they have already distributed half a million face masks, particularly to public school students in the city. The city government has about 100,000 face masks in stock for emergencies, and some 200,000 additional face masks coming in, he added.

Additionally, about 50,000 face masks were donated by the Philippine Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. to the city government on Monday.

The city mayor also said they received about 500 thermal scanners as a donation from a citizen, a medical supplier, and a vendor of medical supplies.

These will be distributed in day care centers and health centers, Domagoso said.
