E-Trikes in Manila / CTTO

Domagoso to take e-trikes off Manila street

On Thursday, Mayor of Manila Isko Moreno said he would ban all e-tricycles as it creates "chaos" in the capital of the nation.

This, Jojo Garcia, General Manager of Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), said e-tricycles are classified by the national government as "toys."

Domagoso said around 300 e-trikes were affecting the operations of public utility jeepneys in Manila. He added that he will prohibit the use of e-tricycles in the city while the government is still studying the ban of e-trikes around Metro Manila.

The mayor of Manila said that e-trikes could not be regulated by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) because they are not motorized cars.

Domagoso said he would also urge the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to stop promoting and selling electric vehicles.

“Before e-trikes are released from factories, they should already indicate that these cannot be used for public transport,” he said.

Since 2018, the city government of Manila has received hundreds of electricity-run vehicles from the Department of Energy (DOE).

The e-tricycles were used in tours in the city’s historic sites aside from being a public utility vehicle.
