Customs discovers smuggled vegetables in Manila Port
Customs officials said they discovered 16 containers of misdeclared agricultural products worth around P50 million.
In a statement, Port of Manila (POM) District Collector Arsenia Ilagan said the apprehended goods arrived at the port from China on August 8.
She said the shipments are consigned to Shinerise Trading Service and was processed by Customs broker Johnna Philipian Cristobal Aceveda.
Upon inspection of the shipment, Customs examiners found out some PHP20.080 million worth each of carrots and onions, PHP10.040 million worth of broccoli and PHP2.510 million worth of potatoes.
Based on the initial report, the consignee declared the shipment as fish balls with total declared duties and taxes of PHP2,542,882.
The goods were alerted on August 14 for violation of Section 1400 “Misdeclaration, Misclassification and Undervaluation in Goods Declaration,” in relation to Section 1113 “Property Subject to Seizure and Forfeiture,” of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA).
A Warrant of Seizure and Detention (WSD) was issued against the shipment in violation of Section 1400, in relation to Section 1113 of the CMTA on September 4.
Ilagan has already ordered the cancelation of the consignee’s accreditation while the customs broker is under investigation.
Last month, Customs officers also seized PHP665,000 worth of smuggled rice in the Port of Zamboanga and PHP24 million worth of mis-declared shipments of carrots, onions and potatoes at the Manila International Container Port.
