A colorful mural depicting the history of the Philippines was painted at the renovated Lagusnilad underpass, according to Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso.

The mayor shared photos on his Facebook account showing the mural and its images of significant events during the pre-colonial period and Spanish colonial period in the country.

With the mural’s installation, the Manila City government and National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) aimed to boost awareness on Filipino art, culture, and history by bringing art to public spaces.

Earlier, Domagoso said vertical gardens were placed at the underpass in line with their plan to create more open and green spaces in the Philippine capital.

Non-skid tiles were also used for the flooring so people, particularly the elderly, will not slip on the tiles during the rainy season.

The Manila mayor said the underpass will be reopened to the public soon.

The renovation of Lagusnilad underpass was met with mixed reactions after vendors who sold goods at the area were displaced to make way for the refitting.

The Manila city government has since worked on the installment of over a hundred metal vending stalls along Ylaya Street in Divisoria and near the Manila City Hall to give vendors a “dignified” place to conduct their livelihood.
