The jeepney driver who rammed a group of students crossing a pedestrian lane in Makati City Wednesday night tested positive for illegal drug juse, according to the police.

Police Major Gideon Ines of the Makati Police confirmed the driver, Crisalde Tamparong, 31, tested positive for drugs.

This developed following instructions by Makati Mayor Abby Binay to test the driver for illegal drugs.

Tamparong was involved in the accident that killed one and injured seven students along J. P. Rizal Avenue on Wednesday night.

In a statement, the mayor also recommended to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to immediately suspend the franchise granted to the jeepney’s owner.

“I am deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic accident last night in Barangay Poblacion that has claimed the life of a 14-year-old student of Pio del Pilar National High School and caused serious injuries to his seven other schoolmates as they were walking home,” Binay said in the statement. “My heart goes out to their parents, especially to the parents of Jules Villapando, whose young life was abruptly cut short by the senseless tragedy. I offer my heartfelt condolences to them.”

The minors, who were then waiting for a ride, were sideswiped by the jeepney driven by Tamparong, as it was traversing J. P. Rizal Avenue from Makati Avenue towards the direction of Barangay Guadalupe Nuevo.

The students, with ages from 13 to 17, were brought to Ospital ng Makati and Makati Medical Center for treatment.

“The Makati police are conducting a thorough investigation and now have the driver in custody. I have asked that he be immediately subjected to a drug test. I have also ordered the police to identify the operator of the jeepney and recommend the immediate suspension of its franchise by LTFRB,” Binay declared.

Since the time of the accident, Makati’s quick response teams have been assisting the accident victims, extending all assistance and closely monitoring their condition.

“I appeal to all Makatizens to join me in praying for the victims that they may be healed fast and fully recover from their traumatic experience. Let us also pray for their families that the Lord give them hope and courage during this crisis,” the mayor asked.

“I assure the victims and their families that the city government will see to it that justice will be served,” she added.
