Some LGUs to open quarantine facilities for OFWs

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said some local government units decided to open quarantine facilities for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in their home provinces.

"Nakausap ko naman 'yung mga mayors, sila naman ay tatanggapin 'yung mga OFWs... pero may mga imposition din sila lalo 'yung mga tinatawag natin na probinsiya na may zero cases pa ngayon, magdadagdag pa sila ng additional quarantine (facilities) para sa OFW," Año said in an interview on GMA News' Unang Balita.

He also pointed out that OFWs, who could have already owned spacious residences, can undergo self-quarantine in their respective homes.

"Ang sinasuggest natin dito dahil ito'y mga OFWs na 'yan, ang unang pinupundar nila ay makapagpagawa ng mga bahay nila so we are expecting lalo na 'yung mga OFWs na matagal na sa labas ng bansa, magaganda na 'yung mga bahay na napatayo niyan kaya puwede na silang mag-home quarantine," he said.

"'Yung talagang masikip pa din, doon sila sa isolation facilities," Año added.

This came after the League of Provinces of the Philippines said the returning OFWs must still undergo quarantine and be subjected for COVID-19 testing once they arrive in their home provinces.

President Rodrigo Duterte gave government agencies one week to bring a total of 24,000 OFWs back to their home provinces as most of them have been stranded in quarantine facilities in Metro Manila for more than a month.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III, however, said this could be done in just three days.

Meanwhile, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration administrator Hans Leo Cacdac said these OFWs already tested negative in a PCR-based test, which means they are safe and free from COVID-19.
