Public asked to use bags in disposing ash

The Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (DRRMO) of cities in southern Metro Manila asked the public to refrain from throwing ash and sand in drainage systems.

The Makati City DRRMO asked the public to place ash in sacks and wait for the Department of Environmental Services (DES) to collect these because throwing ash in drainage systems may cause clogging.

The Muntinlupa City DRRMO reminded the public not to use water to clean roofs, garages, and roads because ash contains sulfur dioxide, a substance harmful to health and bodies of water.

“It will go to our drainages leading to our tributaries connected to Laguna de Bay, where Maynilad gets our drinking water (treated/filtrated). Better to sprinkle water so as not to disturb the ashes, sweep, and put it inside the garbage bag,” the DRRMO said on their Facebook page. Residents may call 8861-1866 for the collection schedule.

In Parañaque City, Mayor Edwin Olivarez directed the DRRM council “to ensure public health and safety is prioritized”, monitor unjust price increases of masks, advise response assets to prepare for any eventuality that may arise, and explore the possibility of providing support and assistance to affected local government units in the Taal region.

The city’s DRRMO is on blue alert status and is closely monitoring the situation, and is in constant coordination and communication with the Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and other LGUs.
