How to Be the Considerate Neighbor Everyone Respects in Your Subdivision

account_balanceMetro News account_circleNoah James chat_bubble_outline0 Comments

The value of building good relationships with your neighbors cannot be overemphasized. Besides giving you the opportunity to share long-lasting friendships with them, those who live closest to you are in the best position to help you out, especially during emergencies and disasters. Just think about the many typhoons and floods that have beset the Philippines through the years and how neighbors have helped each other out, keeping the “bayanihan” spirit alive.

Perhaps you’ve finally found the ideal home after months of searching for a Lipa City house and lot for sale and you’ve finalized your plans to move to a new neighborhood soon. If that’s the case, exert some extra effort to be a good neighbor to everyone in the subdivision. That way, you can readily adjust to your new surroundings, gain people’s respect, and receive a helping hand whenever you need one. To help you become the considerate and remarkable neighbor that everyone in your community will look up to, consider the following tips:

Reach Out to Your Neighbors

As with other types of relationships, the first step to building good relations with your neighbors is to get to know them. Smile and introduce yourself when you see them. You can also prepare puto, kakanin, or similar treats to give out to them, as gifting other people with good food is always a pleasant way to break the ice and start a conversation.

Another way to reach out is to invite them whenever you have parties or social gatherings at home. But if you cannot accommodate a lot of guests, consider sharing packed meals or dessert with your next-door neighbors to make them feel included and valued. You may also want to be generous with your “hellos” and “thank-yous” whenever they’re warranted. Little considerations like these will go a long way in earning your neighbors’ trust and respect.

Be Mindful of the Noise You Make

One of the best ways to build and preserve neighborly relationships is to avoid making excessive noise, which can affect the lives of your neighbors and disrupt the peace in the subdivision. Keep the volume as low as possible when watching television, gaming, or listening to music, particularly when it’s late at night or early in the morning. If you have to carry out noisy repairs or maintenance work that might bother the neighbors, try to schedule them during the day and complete these tasks as quickly as possible. It would also be best to let your neighbors know in advance that you intend to have construction work done just to give them a head up.

Similarly, it is also prudent to inform your neighbors about noisy activities like parties or karaoke sessions beforehand and impose a time limit on them if it’s possible. While there is nothing wrong with having a good time, you should ensure that your fun will not cause misery to others. It is also worth noting that not being mindful of the noise you produce may not only lead to verbal complaints from your neighbors, but a formal legal case. Under the Civil Code of the Philippines, loud music, noisy pets, karaoke sounds, and all other types of noise that can interfere with the rights of citizens (i.e., your neighbors) to enjoy or feel comfortable on their own property can be considered nuisances.

Offer Support

Being a considerate neighbor also means paying attention to the needs of others and providing them with help and support—even without being asked. For instance, if a mom or a dad in the neighborhood is sick, you can pack a meal for them or offer to purchase whatever they need in the grocery store to ease their burden. If a neighbor is selling longganisa, tocino, or other homemade goods, buy their products to show your support for their business venture. Such gestures may seem small, but they will surely help create the impression that you are a kind and thoughtful neighbor.

Follow the Golden Rule

To live in harmony and maintain good relations with your neighbors, observe the “Golden Rule” at all times—treat them as you want to be treated. Don’t want your neighbors to gossip about your family? Pay them the same courtesy and refrain from being the neighborhood gossip. Here are other ways that you can put this ethical principle into practice as you go about your life in the community:

  • If you would like to be acknowledged by your neighbors, remember their names and greet them politely whenever you see them.

  • Address misunderstandings and issues with your neighbors calmly and respectfully. Talk with them directly and find ways to come up with a mutually beneficial solution instead of going straight to the barangay to report them.

  • Be responsible with your pets. Keep them quiet and ensure they do not roam around the neighborhood or make a mess on either the street or your neighbor’s property.

  • Dispose of your trash properly. Never dump your rubbish on your neighbor’s lawn.

  • Keep your yard or garden clean and neat to avoid diminishing your neighborhood’s curb appeal.

Being a good and considerate neighbor requires effort, pakikisama, and even sacrifice at times. But the fruits are worth the trouble once your neighbors have become reliable friends. Aside from making your community and home life happier, you will be at peace knowing that you always have people close by who are willing to help you during times of need. Keep the abovementioned tips in mind as you start your new life in a new neighborhood and find more ways to make meaningful connections.
